Augusta Community Garden
The Demonstration Garden was started in 2016 at the Augusta Community Garden's first location on Ohio Street and was moved in 2024 to the new location at the former Robinson Elementary School. This display garden features the K-State Vegetable Variety Trails, a Three Sister's Demonstration Garden and a Pollinator Plot. Every year the Butler County Master Gardeners take part in the K-State Variety trials for tomatoes and peppers. The information gathered through this research is used to make recommendations of the best varieties to grow in Kansas. The trials test determinate and indeterminate tomatoes along with sweet and hot peppers. The Three Sisters Garden demonstrates a traditional Native American style of planting using varieties they would have planted. The corn is planted first to provide support for the pole beans which are planted when the corn is knee high. The final component is the squash which is planted last and serves to shade the ground and prevent weeds. All produce raised from this garden is donated to the Augusta Community Caring Center and the Senior Center. The pollinator plot features native flowers to attract pollinators to the community garden. This garden is continuing to evolve and more will be added in the coming years. The Demonstration Garden is open for viewing at anytime during the growing season. Scheduled workdays for this location are Tuesday Mornings and Thursday afternoons weather permitting.
